Overview

Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Thabit, known as al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, a hadith scholar and historian. He was born in 392 AH (1002 CE) and died in 463 AH (1072 CE), according to the "Encyclopaedia of Notable Scholars and Men of Letters". He wrote the "History of Baghdad". 1

From his life

Ibn al-Jawzi relates that the vizier Ibn al-Muslima showed him a document that some Jews had produced, claiming that it dropped the poll tax from the people of Khaybar. Al-Khatib said that it was forged, and argued that it contained the witness of Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan, who embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest, while Khaybar was in the seventh year. 2

In the Basasiri affair he went into hiding and left Baghdad for Syria, then returned in 462 AH. Ibn al-Jawzi says that he had fifty-six works, and that he was of the school of Ahmad ibn Hanbal and then moved to the school of al-Shafi'i. 2

The museum's data attribute to him the book Iqtida al-Ilm al-Amal. 3
