The Prophetic sira

The Prophetic biography is the transmitted history of the life of the Prophet: his birth, his upbringing, his call in Mecca, his migration, his campaigns, and his death, together with what relates to the state of his companions and his family. ^{1 2}

It arose out of the campaigns and the reports transmitted with chains of narration in the works of Ibn Ishaq and his students. It later became a discipline in its own right, recording a history of twenty-three years.

The Sheikh describes the Prophet entering a narrow cave in the Meccan desert, and says the Islamic state began from that cave two days after leaving for Yathrib (needs_source). ^{3 4} He describes the Battle of the Trench, when the confederate Arabs came against Madina with hypocrites inside it, and says the hearts reached the throats (needs_source). ^{5 6} He says the Banu Hashim guarded the Prophet until a verse promising protection from people was revealed (needs_source). ⁷ He says the hypocrites came late to prayer, and the Prophet told the people not to precede him in bowing and prostration (needs_source). ⁸ He holds that the Prophet was a human like other humans, and that his miracle lies in that (his view). ⁹ He says Abu Lahab is named in the Qur'an while he was alive, and that he could easily have stopped Islam (needs_source). ¹⁰ He says al-Walid ibn al-Mughira was among the early Muslims by rank, that Khalid became Muslim later, and that Quraysh would hand over its leaders (needs_source). ^{11 12}
