Overview
Sunna in language means a way, praiseworthy or blameworthy; for the muhaddithun it is everything transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ — word, deed, approval, physical or moral trait, or biography before and after prophethood — and for the usulis what is transmitted of word, deed or approval establishing a legal ruling 12. It is the second root of rulings after the Qur'an: the Qur'an is worshipped in its wording and mass-transmitted, while the Sunna's wording is not worshipped, and what is certain is its totality not its details — it is the Book's clarification 3. Al-Shafi'i is quoted that the "wisdom" joined to the Book in the verses is the Sunna.
