Summary

The youngest of the six men of the Thaqif delegation in the year 9 AH, and the most eager to learn the Qur'an. The Prophet appointed him over his people, and he kept them firm in Islam on the day of the apostasy. 1.

His story

Uthman ibn Abi al-As (may God be pleased with him) was the youngest of the Thaqif delegation of six. 2 The delegation used to go out to the Prophet and leave Uthman behind with their baggage. When they came back, he would go to the Prophet, ask him to recite the Qur'an to him, and ask him about the religion. If he found the Prophet asleep, he went to Abu Bakr for the same purpose. 2. The Prophet appointed him over Thaqif because he was the most eager among them to understand Islam and to learn religion and the Qur'an. 2. Al-Mubarakfuri notes that he was among the greatest blessings to his people in the time of the apostasy: when Thaqif resolved to apostatize, he said, “O people of Thaqif, you were the last of the people to accept Islam, so do not be the first to abandon it.” They refused to apostatize and held firm in Islam. 1.

For young visitors

A young man in the Thaqif delegation taught himself the Qur'an every day. The Prophet made him leader of his people, and he reminded them of Islam, and they stood firm in it.

In Ibn Hisham's Sira

The Prophet appointed him over the Thaqif delegation because he was the most eager among them to understand Islam and learn the Qur'an, after Abu Bakr had recommended him. 3 When he sent him to them, the Prophet advised him: “Be lenient in the prayer, and judge people by the weakest among them, for among them are the old, the young, the weak, and the people with needs.” 4 See the delegation of Thaqif.
