Conquest of Sabur

فتح سابور

Sabur (Bishapur)

Uthman came to Sabur in 23 or 24h — its folk already dreading the Muslims and its marzban, Shahrak's brother, having dreamed an Arab stripped his shirt, which gripped his heart — after brief defiance he sought aman: no killing no captives, dhimma and prompt payment. The people later betrayed, and in 26h Abu Musa took it by force, Uthman ibn Abi al-As (may God be pleased with him) on his vanguard.

Overview

al-Baladhuri relates that Uthman ibn Abi al-As came to Sabur in 23 AH, and it is also said 24 AH, and found its people in awe of the Muslims. The brother of Shahrak saw in a dream a man of the Arabs stripping him of his shirt, so he asked for safe-conduct and peace. Uthman made peace with him on condition that no one be killed or taken captive, that he have a dhimma, and that he pay money in advance. 1

The breach and the conquest

Then the people of Sabur broke the covenant, and Abu Musa took it by force in 26 AH, with Uthman ibn Abi al-As in his vanguard. The city is Sabur. 1

The Joint Conquests of Fars

Late in Umar's caliphate Abu Musa and Uthman ibn Abi al-As joined: Arrajan by sulh on jizya and kharaj; Shiraz of Ardashir-Khurra — dhimma paying kharaj, free exodus for who wished, no killing no enslaving; Siniz whose folk stayed land-workers; Uthman took Hisn Jannaba by aman, and Jarra, Kazarun and Nawbandajan of Sabur; Harim ibn Hayyan took Qal'at Shabir by force after siege and fighting.
