Summary

Umar sent Abd Allah ibn Abd Allah ibn Utban, one of the notable Companions and leaders of the Ansar, an ally of the Banu al-Hubla, to Isfahan, and reinforced him with Abu Musa al-Ash'ari. At the head of the Persian vanguard was Shahriyar ibn Jadhawayh, an old man, who called for single combat; Abd Allah ibn Warqa al-Riyahi came out against him and killed him, and the people of the city were routed. He then marched on the city of Jayy and besieged it until Fadhusfan made peace with him over Isfahan: whoever stayed would pay the jizya and keep his property, and whoever refused and left would have his land given to the Muslims. 1.
