Overview
Al-Baladhuri relates that Umar appointed Uthman ibn Abi al-As al-Thaqafi over Bahrain and Oman in 15 AH, and he sent an army to Tana. 1
The raids
Uthman sent his brother al-Hakam to Bahrain and went on himself to Oman. Then he sent an army to Tana, and wrote to Umar about it after his return. 1
He sent al-Hakam to Barus, and his other brother al-Mughira to the creek of Daybul, where he met the enemy and was victorious. 1
Umar's reply
Umar wrote: "O brother of Thaqif, you have carried a bundle of sticks on a stick," and swore that if the army had been struck, he would have taken from his tribe the like of them. 1
