Abu al-Mukhtar's Satire on the Ahwaz Officials

قصيدة أبي المختار في عمال الأهواز

Khuzistan (al-Ahwaz)

Abu al-Mukhtar Yazid ibn Qabs al-Sa'iq raised his poem against the Ahwaz officials to Umar: 'Tell the Commander of the Faithful, God's trustee in command and ban — leave not the rustaq-folk and villagers who gulp God's wealth; send to al-Hajjaj and learn his account, to Juzz and to Bishr, forget neither Nafi', nor Ibn Ghallab of Nasr's lords, nor al-Nu'man, nor the Banu-Ghazwan son-in-law, ask Shibl for the money and Ibn Muharrish.' Umar mulcted every named man of half his wealth — till he took a sandal and left a sandal — and when Abu Bakra objected 'I left you nothing' came 'your brother holds the treasury and Ubulla's tithes and lends you capital': ten thousand was taken, or half his estate.

Overview

The poet Abu al-Mukhtar Yazid ibn Qays al-Su'ayq presented Umar ibn al-Khattab with a poem about the governors of al-Ahwaz. In it he urged Umar not to let the people of the rustaqs and villages plunder God's wealth, and he named a number of governors for him to hold to account. 1

What Umar did

According to the account, Umar divided the wealth of those whom Abu al-Mukhtar had named by half, until "he took one sandal and left the other". Among them was Abu Bakra, who said that he had held no office on Umar's behalf. It was said to Umar that Abu Bakra's brother was in charge of the treasury and the tithe of al-Ubulla, and was giving him money to trade with. Umar took ten thousand from him, and it is said that he divided half of his wealth with him. 1

The event took place in Khuzistan, that is, al-Ahwaz. Needs an additional source: the data gives no date, and there is no second source.

The seven ahruf

The Prophet's saying 'the Qur'an was revealed in seven ahruf, so read of it what is easy' — narrated through Umar's dispute with Hisham ibn Hakim over Surat al-Furqan; its exact meaning is one of the widest debates in Qur'anic sciences.
