In brief
Abd al-Rahman b. al-Qasim al-Utaqi al-Misri, Abu Abdallah, their client; the scholar and mufti of the Egyptian lands and the companion of Imam Malik, who died in 191 AH. 2
Learning from Malik
He narrated from Malik, Abd al-Rahman b. Shurayh, the reader Nafi' b. Abi Nu'aym, Bakr b. Mudar, and a small group; from him narrated Asbagh, al-Harith b. Miskin, Sahnun, Isa b. Dinar, Muhammad b. Abdallah b. Abd al-Hakam, and others. When he was mentioned before Malik he said — may God heal him — that he was like a pouch filled with musk, and when Malik was asked about him and about Ibn Wahb he said Ibn Wahb is a learned man and Ibn al-Qasim is a jurist. 2
His piety and wealth
He was a man of property who spent his fortune on learning and refused the gifts of rulers; he said he went to the Hijaz twelve times, spending a thousand dinars each time, and Asad b. al-Furat says he completed two qur'an-readings each day and night. Al-Harith b. Miskin said he combined worship, generosity, courage, learning, scrupulousness, and asceticism, and that in his youth he was better known for worship than for learning. 3
