«ليس على المسلم في عبده ولا في فرسه صدقة»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on charity on slaves, horses and honey. Malik transmits from Abdallah ibn Dinar, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, and from Iraq ibn Malik, from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), that the Prophet ﷺ said: a Muslim owes no charity on his slave or his horse. The editor notes that the 'and' between Sulayman and Iraq is stated in Yahya's transmission, though it differs from the other Muwatta transmitters; Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 17/123-124) holds that Yahya erred in it and that the hadith is preserved in all the Muwatta versions from Sulayman ibn Yasar from Iraq ibn Malik, two followers of the same rank, Iraq dying in 102 and Sulayman in 107. Abu Musab transmitted it from Malik, as did al-Qanabi, al-Shaybani and others. 1
