Summary
The only report in the chapter on zakat on cattle. Malik transmits from Humayd ibn Qays al-Makki, from Tawus al-Yamani, that Muadh ibn Jabal took from thirty cows a yearling calf (tabi') and from forty cows a two-year-old (musinna); when he was brought less than that, he refused to take anything from it, saying that he had not heard from the Prophet ﷺ about it, until he met him and asked him; but the Prophet died before Muadh came back. The editor notes that Ibn Abd al-Barr said that the apparent sense is stopped on Muadh, but that his saying that he had not heard about fewer than thirty or forty shows that he heard about thirty and forty; such a thing is not an opinion but a transmitted ruling. 1
