Summary
Malik transmits from Rabia ibn Abi Abd al-Rahman, from Umm Salama, wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that the Prophet said: whoever is struck by a misfortune and says the formula of return that God commanded al-Baqara 156, then says: O God, reward me in my misfortune and give me something better than it, God will do that for him. Umm Salama said: when Abu Salama died, I said that, then I said: and who is better than Abu Salama? God then gave her His messenger, and she married him. The editor notes, citing Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 3/180-181), that Yahya transmitted it this way and Maan and others followed him, while Ibn Wahb, Abu Musab and Suwayd transmitted it from Malik from Rabia that Abu Salama said to Umm Salama: I heard it from the Prophet. The report is connected from many routes, and the disagreement over whether it came from the Prophet to Umm Salama or from Abu Salama to her does not harm it, since Companions transmitting from one another are equal; citing al-Tirmidhi (3511). 1
