Summary

A pact concluded after the war of al-Fijar, in Dhu al-Qa'da. Among the Quraysh who gathered for it were Banu Hashim, Banu al-Muttalib, Asad ibn Abd al-Uzza, Zuhra ibn Kilab and Taym ibn Murra. They gathered in the house of Abdullah ibn Jud'an and pledged to support every wronged person in Mecca until his wrong was returned to him. 1 2 3. The Prophet attended it and spoke well of it after receiving the mission. 4

The pact

The tribes gathered in the house of Abdullah ibn Jud'an al-Taymi, because of his age and nobility. They made a covenant and pledged that they would not find anyone wronged in Mecca, from among its people or from among other people, without standing with him and against whoever had wronged him, until his wrong was returned to him. 1 2 The author holds that the spirit of this pact runs against the Jahiliyya zeal that tribal partisanship (al-'asabiyya) used to stir up. 5

What the Prophet said of it

The Prophet said, after God had honoured him with the mission, that he had witnessed in the house of Ibn Jud'an a pact for which he would not love to have red camels, and that if he were called to it in Islam, he would answer. 1 5 2 3.

Its cause

It is said that the cause of the pact was that a man from Zabid came to Mecca with merchandise. al-As ibn Wa'il al-Sahmi bought it from him and withheld his due. The man appealed for help to the confederates (al-ahlaf): Abd al-Dar, Makhzum, Jumah, Sahm and Adi, but they paid him no heed. 5 3 He climbed Abu Qubays and called out verses describing his grievance, raising his voice. Al-Zubayr ibn Abd al-Muttalib took up the matter and said that this could not be left. The men named in the pact gathered, went to al-As ibn Wa'il, and took the Zabidi's due from him, after they had concluded the pact. 5 3

From another source

According to al-Mas'udi, the Pact of al-Fudul took place directly after their return from al-Fijar. 6

Notes for researchers

  • The author gives the cause of the pact in the form "it is said," and the museum records it in the same way.
  • Abd al-Dar, among the confederates, has not yet been given a card.
For young visitors

After the war of al-Fijar, a number of Quraysh families gathered in the house of Abdullah ibn Jud'an and agreed to support every wronged person in Mecca until he received his right. The Prophet attended this agreement as a young man. After the mission, he said that if he were called to it in Islam, he would answer.
