Quraysh's chiefs offered the Prophet ﷺ's uncle to leave the Prophet be if he said one word; the Prophet said 'say there is no god but God', and they refused and left.

When Abu Talib's illness grew heavy, Quraysh sent about twenty-five of its chiefs — among them Utba ibn Rabi'a, Shayba, Abu Jahl, Umayya ibn Khalaf and Abu Sufyan — asking him to take from the Prophet ﷺ a pledge for them and for himself. Abu Talib told the Prophet his people's chiefs wanted to give and take; the Prophet said: 'what if I give you a word by which you would rule the Arabs?' Abu Jahl answered 'we would give you it and ten like it'; the Prophet said: 'you say there is no god but God and cast down what you worship beside Him'. They clapped their hands, asked 'do you mean to make the gods one god?', told one another he would give them nothing of what they wanted, and scattered. On this occasion the opening of Surat Sad was revealed.

Storytellers (10–12) read the Explorers text, then cross to the Scholars text.

When Abu Talib's illness grew heavy, Quraysh feared he would die and they would be left to get at his nephew after him, so it sent a delegation of its chiefs, about twenty-five men — among them Utba ibn Rabi'a, Shayba, Abu Jahl, Umayya ibn Khalaf and Abu Sufyan — asking Abu Talib to take from the Prophet ﷺ a pledge for them and for himself. Abu Talib told the Prophet his people's chiefs had gathered to give him and take from him, and the Prophet said: 'what if I give you a word by which you would rule the Arabs and the non-Arabs would serve you?' Abu Jahl said 'what is it? we would give you it and ten like it'; the Prophet said: 'you say there is no god but God and cast down what you worship beside Him'. They clapped their hands and said 'do you mean to make the gods one god?', then told one another he would give them nothing of what they wanted, and scattered. On this occasion the opening of Surat Sad was revealed. The accounts give the word in different phrasings; the book fixes Ibn Ishaq's wording and notes the multiplicity of the texts.

Summary

When the illness of Abu Talib grew heavy, Quraysh feared that he would die and that they would then harm his nephew. They sent a delegation of about twenty-five of their notables, among them Utba ibn Rabi'a, Shayba, Abu Jahl, Umayya ibn Khalaf and Abu Sufyan, to ask Abu Talib to obtain from the Prophet a pledge for them and for himself. 1 2

The account

Abu Talib told the Prophet that the notables of his people had gathered to give him something and to take something from him. The Prophet said: "Tell me, if I gave you one word, and you spoke it, would you rule the Arabs by it, and would the non-Arabs submit to you?" 3 2 Abu Jahl asked: "What is it? We will give you that, and ten like it." The Prophet said: "You say there is no god but God, and you renounce what you worship besides Him." 3

Dispersal

They clapped their hands and said: "Do you want to make the gods a single god?" Then some of them said to the others that he would not give them what they wanted, and they dispersed. 3 On that occasion the opening of Sura Sad was revealed. 3

Notes for researchers

  • The reports say the word was offered in different forms. The book adopts Ibn Ishaq's form and notes the variety of wordings. 3
For young visitors
