Summary

A war that broke out in the fifteenth year of the life of the Prophet between Quraysh with their allies from Kinana and Qays Aylan. It was called al-Fijar because the sanctities of the Sacred Territory and the Sacred Months were violated in it. 1 2 3. The Prophet attended it, providing arrows for his uncles. After it came the pact of al-Fudul. 1

The two sides and their command

The commander of Quraysh and of all of Kinana was Harb ibn Umayya, for his standing among them in age and nobility. 1 2 4. Victory was for Qays over Kinana early in the day. At midday, victory was for Kinana over Qays. 1 2

The name

The war was named al-Fijar because the sanctities of the Sacred Territory and the Sacred Months were violated in it. 1 3

The Prophet in it

The Prophet attended this war at the age of fifteen, and he would provide arrows for his uncles, that is, prepare the arrows for them to shoot. 1 2

From another source

According to al-Mas'udi, the war was between Qays Aylan and Banu Kinana, and they permitted fighting in the sacred months, so it was named al-Fijar. He says there were twenty years between the Year of the Elephant and the year of al-Fijar. Al-Fijar ended in Shawwal. He counts four fijars, the last of which is the Fijar of al-Barradh, in which the fighting took place. 5

Notes for researchers

  • The Prophet's age at the time is disputed. The Sealed Nectar gives fifteen years, and al-Mas'udi gives twenty years between the Elephant and al-Fijar. Both reports are recorded without preference.
  • The book does not mention the cause of the war or the locations of its days. Their details are in Ibn Hisham.
For young visitors

At the age of fifteen, the Prophet ﷺ witnessed a war between the tribes of Quraysh and the tribes of Qays, and he helped his uncles by preparing arrows. The war was called al-Fijar because it took place in the months in which the Arabs used to forbid fighting.

Hilf al-Fudul (the pact of the virtuous)

A pact sworn in Dhu al-Qa'da at the house of Abdullah ibn Jud'an by the clans of Hashim, al-Muttalib, Asad ibn Abd al-Uzza, Zuhra ibn Kilab and Taym ibn Murra, to stand with anyone wronged in Mecca until his right is restored; the young Muhammad witnessed it and praised it after prophethood.
