al-Hutat ibn Yazid al-Mujashi'i

الحتات بن يزيد المجاشعي

c. 661 CE · c. 41 AH

A notable of Banu Tamim in the 9 AH delegation; Ibn Ishaq calls him al-Habhab ibn Yazid and Ibn Hisham corrects the name to al-Hutat, the man the Prophet ﷺ paired in brotherhood with Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan. He died with Mu'awiya during his caliphate, and Mu'awiya took his estate by that brotherhood, for which al-Farazdaq reproached him in two verses.

Overview

One of the notables of the Banu Tamim who came in their delegation to the Prophet in 9 AH, from the Banu Darim. 1 2

His name

Ibn Ishaq calls him "al-Hubhab ibn Yazid", and Ibn Hisham says he is al-Hutat. 1 The editors note that "al-Hubhab" is so given in the Isaba and in the Usul further on, and that two copies make him "Zayd". 1

Brotherhood with Mu'awiya

Ibn Hisham relates that the Prophet made brothers among some of his Companions of the Muhajirun: between Abu Bakr and Umar, between Uthman ibn Affan and Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, between Talha ibn Ubayd Allah and al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, between Abu Dharr al-Ghifari and al-Miqdad ibn Amr al-Bahrani, and between Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan and al-Hutat ibn Yazid al-Mujashi'i. 1 When al-Hutat died in the caliphate of Mu'awiya, Mu'awiya took what he left as an inheritance by that brotherhood. 1 Al-Farazdaq then said to Mu'awiya two verses of his rebuking him: "Your father and my uncle left an inheritance that its kin possess, so why was the inheritance of al-Hutat eaten, while the inheritance of Harb is firmly yours and melts?" 1

Notes

This brotherhood between Muhajirun is distinct from the well-known brotherhood between the Muhajirun and the Ansar; Ibn Hisham does not give its date here.

al-Aqra' ibn Habis al-Tamimi

A paramount chieftain and arbitrator of Banu Tamim in Najd; given one hundred camels at al-Ji'rana among al-Mu'allafa Qulubuhum, he witnessed the conquest of Mecca, Hunayn and al-Ta'if with the Prophet, came with the Tamim delegation in 9 AH and pronounced that the Muslims' orator and poet surpassed Tamim's, after which the delegation accepted Islam; he later took part in the early conquests.
