Overview

A poet of the Banu Minqar of the Banu Tamim, who came in the delegation of the Banu Tamim to the Prophet in 9 AH. 1

In the delegation of Banu Tamim

Ibn Ishaq names him among the notables of the delegation, and Ibn Hisham traces him to the Banu Minqar ibn Ubayd ibn al-Harith ibn Amr ibn Ka'b ibn Sa'd ibn Zayd Manat ibn Tamim. 1 2 The editors establish that one copy of the originals makes him and al-Habhab one person. 1 He was the youngest of the people, so they left him with their camels. Qays ibn Asim, who hated him, said to the Prophet that he was a young lad among their baggage and belittled him; the Prophet gave him what he had given the others. 3 4 When he heard Qays's words he satirised him in two verses: he reviled him before the Messenger and was not right nor correct, and the lordship of his people is broad while the lordship of Qays is narrow. Ibn Hisham left out a third verse because it was obscene. 4

In the caliphate of Umar

Al-Baladhuri relates that he went to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) from Rishahr with the good news of a conquest. 5
