Summary
Malik transmits from Abu al-Nadr, client of Umar ibn Ubaydallah, from Nafi, client of Abu Qatada al-Ansari, from Abu Qatada, that he was with the Messenger of God ﷺ until, on part of the road to Mecca, he stayed behind with companions who were in ihram while he was not; he saw a wild donkey, mounted his horse, and asked his companions to hand him his whip; they refused; then his spear; they refused; so he took it himself, charged at the donkey and killed it. Some of the Companions of the Messenger of God ate of it and some refused. When they caught up with the Messenger of God they asked him, and he said: it is a provision God has fed you. The editor notes that Ibn Abd al-Barr said it is relayed (mursal) in the Muwatta, and that it is connected through routes from Ibn Abbas, Jabir, Ibn Buhayna and Anas, and that al-Bukhari and Muslim transmitted the hadith of Ibn Buhayna. 1
