Summary

A report that Malik transmits as a mursal from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, in the chapter on the fear prayer: the Prophet ﷺ did not pray the noon and afternoon prayers on the day of the Trench until the sun set. Yahya then says: Malik said that the report from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Salih ibn Khawwat is the one I like best on the fear prayer. The editor notes that Abu Mus'ab and Suwayd transmitted it, and that in Abu Mus'ab's version the phrase is "the report of Yazid ibn Ruman from Salih ibn Khawwat is the best I have heard". The difference reflects a change in Malik's own view: Ibn Abd al-Barr says Malik used to rule on the fear prayer by Yazid ibn Ruman's report, then returned to Yahya ibn Sa'id's report from al-Qasim. The difference between them is that in Yazid's report the imam waits for the second group until they complete and then gives salam with them, while in Yahya's version he gives salam after he prays the second rak'a with them, and they then stand and bow for themselves (al-Tamhid). 1

Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, mursal: the Prophet and those with him slept on a journey past the dawn prayer until the sun had risen, so he ordered it made up when they remembered.
