«إنما جعل الإمام ليؤتم به، فلا تختلفوا عليه»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A saying of Malik in the chapter on one who raises his head before the imam: whoever forgets and raises his head before the imam in bowing or prostration should go back to bowing or prostration and not wait for the imam. Doing it otherwise is an error by the one who does it. He argues from the Prophet ﷺ's words that the imam is appointed to be followed, so he should not be opposed, and from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him)'s saying above. The editor notes that Abu Mus'ab and Suwayd transmitted it, and that the hadith "the imam is appointed to be followed" is in the Sahihayn from the reports of Hammam and al-A'raj from Abu Hurayra. 1 2
