«بيننا وبين المنافقين شهود العشاء والصبح، لا يستطيعونهما»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Chain of transmission
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on the night prayer and dawn prayer. Yahya transmits from Malik from Abd al-Rahman ibn Harmala al-Aslami from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab as a mursal: the Prophet ﷺ said the difference between believers and hypocrites is attending the night and dawn prayers in congregation, for the hypocrites cannot manage them, or words to that effect. The editor notes that Abu Mus'ab, Suwayd and al-Shafi'i transmitted it, and Ibn Abd al-Barr says there is no disagreement on its chain or its mursal form. He says the wording is not preserved connected, though its meaning is preserved through established channels (al-Tamhid). 1
