Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on turning the head and clapping when needed in prayer. Yahya transmits from Malik from Abu Hazim Salama ibn Dinar from Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi: the Prophet ﷺ went to Banu Amr ibn Awf to make peace between them. The prayer time came, and the caller asked Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. He did. The Prophet came while people were in the prayer, pushed through until he stood in the row, and people clapped. Abu Bakr did not turn his head during prayer, but when they clapped a lot he turned and saw the Prophet, who signalled to him to stay where he was. Abu Bakr raised his hands, praised God, and withdrew until he was level in the row, and the Prophet came forward and prayed. When he finished, he asked Abu Bakr what kept him from staying, and he said it was not for the son of Abu Quhafa to lead prayer before the Messenger of God. The Prophet then rebuked the people for clapping a lot and said: whoever is troubled in his prayer should say the glorification; clapping is for women. The editor explains tasfih as clapping, and cites al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Hibban, Ahmad, al-Shafi'i and al-Tabarani, and refers to al-Tamhid. 1 2
