Overview

Ifriqiya is a region of the Maghrib between Tripoli and Tangier. 1

Al-Baladhuri reports from Ibn al-Kalbi that Ifriqis ibn Qays ibn Sayfi al-Himyari overcame it in the days of ignorance, and it was named after him. He killed its king Jurjir, and said to the Berbers: "How many of you are there in barbarism!" So they were named Berbers. 1

Abd Allah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh raided it in the caliphate of Uthman, and killed its patrician at Subaytila, and its notables made peace with him for three hundred qintars of gold. Then Uqba ibn Nafi conquered it and laid out its city, al-Qayrawan. 1

The Berbers

The Berbers in al-Baladhuri on Abdallah ibn Salih's report: they claim descent from Barr ibn Qays — but God gave Qays no son called Barr; rather they are of the Jabbarin whom Dawud fought, whose seats in ancient days were Palestine, the people of Amud — who came to the Maghreb and multiplied there; of them are Lawata, the covenant-holders of Barqa, and the Antabulus folk excepted in Amr ibn al-As's sermon.
