Overview

Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, son of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. He fought on the side of the polytheists at Badr, then accepted Islam and his Islam was sound. 1

His entry in al-Isaba

He is Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq ibn Abi Quhafa; al-Bukhari listed him in his book, while Muslim listed him among the Successors, so the scholars hold two readings on whether he counted as a Companion or a Successor 2. Ibn Hajar notes that the rest of his entry comes elsewhere, in the entry of Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah ibn Uthman 2.

His descendants

Al-Mas'udi says that he had many descendants, nomads and settled, in the region of the Hijaz on the side of the road toward Iraq, in the place known as al-Safiniyyat and al-Masih. 1

For younger visitors

Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr was the son of the caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him); he accepted Islam after Badr and his Islam was sound, and the scholars mention him among the narrators of the Companion generation 2.

Notes for researchers

  • al-Isaba fi Tamyiz al-Sahaba, entry 4654 (al-Maktaba al-Asriyya scan, p. 783); al-Bukhari listed him, Muslim placed him among the Successors — the disagreement on his Companionship is recorded.
