Ziyad ibn Abi Sufyan: Mu'awiya made him governor of Basra then Kufa after al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba died in 50 AH; he sent for Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali to set down what would guide people and vocalize God's Book.

Mu'awiya made Ziyad governor of Basra then Kufa; al-Tabari records al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba died in 50 AH and Ziyad governed Kufa. Ibn al-Nadim has Ziyad writing Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali: make something that will be an imam for people and vocalize God's Book — so he set down the chapter of the doer and the done-to. And Ali agreed with Ibn Abbas, then over Basra, to send his aide Ziyad to Fars after its people expelled Sahl ibn Hunayf (may God be pleased with him) around 37 AH: Ziyad promised those who stood with him, warned a party, and the people settled to him so the land held firm and he built some of its forts.
