Overview

Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakra, son of Abu Bakra al-Thaqafi, the first child born in Basra when Utba ibn Ghazwan (may God be pleased with him) settled it at al-Khurayba; his father slaughtered a camel that fed the people of Basra. 1 2

In al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 4655: "Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakra al-Thaqafi" — he explains that he was a Successor born after the Prophet ﷺ's time, the first child born in Basra once it was founded as a garrison town, for which his father fed the people of Basra a slaughtered camel in the year fourteen; and that Ziyad, governing Basra, appointed Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakra as his deputy over part of its administration. 3

The report on seeking command

He narrates that he heard the Prophet say "Do not seek command, for if you are given it without asking, you will be aided in it"; Ibn Hajar remarks that this is doubtful, since al-Bukhari listed him among the transmitters after the Companions, not among the Companions. 3

His transmission

His kunya was Abu Bahr, or it was said Abu Hatim; he has transmission from his father, from Ali, Abd Allah ibn Amr, al-Ashajj al-Asri and others. 3
