Muhammad ibn al-Qasim al-Thaqafi

محمد بن القاسم الثقفي

Muhammad ibn al-Qasim al-Thaqafi, conqueror of Sind in al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik's caliphate; in al-Baladhuri: al-Walid transferred to Antioch a company of the Sindhi Zutt whom Muhammad ibn al-Qasim had assigned to al-Hajjaj, who sent them on to Syria — as Mu'awiya had earlier, in year 49 or 50, moved companies of Basra's Zutt and Sayabija to the coasts, settling some at Antioch.

Overview

Muhammad ibn al-Qasim al-Thaqafi, conqueror of Sind in the caliphate of al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik. 1

The campaign

The book says that al-Hajjaj appointed him over the frontier of Sind and added to him six thousand men of the Syrian army. The expedition took Daybul, Nirun, al-Ruwar and Multan, and Dahir was killed in his battle on the River Mihran. It is related that the expenses of the campaign reached sixty million dirhams. Then Salih ibn Abd al-Rahman removed him and imprisoned him at Wasit, and the reports of his death differ. 2

Al-Baladhuri relates that al-Walid moved to Antioch a group of the Zutt of Sind, whom Muhammad ibn al-Qasim had sent to al-Hajjaj. 3
