The Fitting-out of Muhammad ibn al-Qasim

تجهيز محمد بن القاسم إلى السند

Makran

Al-Hajjaj gave Muhammad ibn al-Qasim the Sind frontier — recalled from a Rayy posting — with six thousand Syrian troops and outfitting down to threads and needles, ordered to muster at Shiraz; he even steeped carded cotton in wine-vinegar, dried in the shade, against Sind's vinegar-scarcity — 'soak it, cook with it, dye with it'. Muhammad marched through Makran, took Qanirbur and Arma'il — Muhammad ibn Harun joining him and dying near it, buried at Qanbal.

Overview

Al-Baladhuri relates that al-Hajjaj appointed Muhammad ibn al-Qasim over the frontier of Sind in the days of al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik. Muhammad was in Fars, and al-Hajjaj had ordered him to march to al-Rayy. 1

Equipping him

Al-Hajjaj gave him the command of the frontier of Sind, added six thousand men of the army of Syria and people from elsewhere, and equipped him with everything he needed, down to thread and tallow. He ordered him to stay in Shiraz until his companions were complete. Jahm ibn Zahr led his vanguard. 1

Al-Hajjaj ordered carded cotton soaked in vinegar and dried in the shade, and told them: when you reach Sind and vinegar is scarce, soak the cotton in water and boil with it. 1

The route

Muhammad marched to Makran and stayed there for some days, then took Qanzabur and Armaʾil. Muhammad ibn Harun joined him and marched with him, then died near Armaʾil and was buried at Qanbal. 1

The Allafis' Coup on the Makran Frontier

Under al-Hajjaj, Sa'id ibn Aslam al-Kilabi held Makran's frontier till the Allafi brothers Mu'awiya and Muhammad, sons of al-Harith, rose and killed him — Allaf being Rabban ibn Hulwan of Quda'a, Abu Jurm. Al-Hajjaj then gave the thaghr to Mujja'a ibn Si'r al-Tamimi, who raided, took plunder, and opened parts of Qandabil — finished later by Muhammad ibn al-Qasim — dying in Makran within the year. His successor Muhammad ibn Harun al-Namari received, for al-Hajjaj, the king of Jazirat al-Yaqut's gift of Muslim-born women orphaned of merchant fathers.
