The Sulh of al-Birun and Sadusan

صلح البيرون وسدوسان

al-Birun

Al-Birun's folk, having already sent envoys who truced with al-Hajjaj, brought fodder and opened their city — and Muhammad let no town pass unconquered. Beyond the river before Mihran, the samaniyya of Sarbindis truced for those behind them at a set kharaj; Sahban fell; at Mihran Dahir prepared. Muhammad ibn Mus'ab al-Thaqafi rode on Sadusan with horse and donkey-men; the samaniyya brokered its aman — kharaj, hostages, and four thousand Zutt who joined the army.

Overview

This entry tells of the treaties with the people of al-Birun and Sadusan during the campaign of Muhammad ibn al-Qasim in Sind. 1

al-Birun

Muhammad ibn al-Qasim came to al-Birun. Its people had sent some of their Samaniyya to al-Hajjaj, and they made peace with him. They provided fodder for Muhammad, let him into their city, and kept the treaty. 1

After al-Birun

al-Baladhuri relates that Muhammad did not pass a town without conquering it, until he crossed a river beyond Mahran. The Samaniyya of Sarbandis came to him, made peace on behalf of those behind them, and he imposed the kharaj on them. Then he marched to Sahban and conquered it, then to Mahran. When this reached Dahir, he prepared to fight him. 1

Sadusan

Muhammad sent Muhammad ibn Musab ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Thaqafi to Sadusan with cavalry. Its people asked for safe-conduct and peace, and the Samaniyya mediated between him and them. He granted them safety, imposed a kharaj on them and took a pledge from them. He returned to Muhammad with four thousand of the Zutt. 1

The Sulh of al-Rur

Months besieged on its hill, al-Rur yielded by sulh — no killing, no laying hands on their budd, 'for the budd is as the churches of Christians and Jews and the fire-houses of Magians' — kharaj laid and a mosque built; then al-Sikka before Bayas fell, a ruin today.
