Overview

Abu Abs ibn Jabr ibn Amr ibn Zayd al-Ansari al-Awsi of the Banu Haritha, known by his kunya. 1 It is said that his name in the Jahiliyya was Abd al-'Uzza, and it is said Ma'bad, and the Prophet named him Abd al-Rahman. 1

What is related of him

Ibn Hajar relates from Ibn al-Kalbi that he was "one of those who killed Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf". 1 Ibn Mandah gives a report of this with a chain reaching his grandson, in which Ka'b used to make poetry and disparage the Prophet. 1 See the killing of Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf. Musa ibn Uqba and others mention him among those who attended Badr. 1 It is said that he was forty-eight years old at the time, and that he and Abu Burda were breaking the idols of the Banu Haritha when they accepted Islam. 1

The lamp that gave light

Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar relates in "al-Muwaffaqiyyat" that the Prophet gave him a staff after his sight had gone, and told him to light his way by it, and it used to shine for him. 1

His death and transmission of hadith

Al-Madaini says that he died in 34 AH at the age of seventy, and Uthman prayed over him. 1 His hadith on the merit of walking in the way of God is in al-Bukhari through Abaya ibn Rifa'a from him. 1 His son Zayd and his grandson Abu Abs ibn Muhammad transmitted from him, and Uthman visited him, and he had been at Badr. 1 Ibn Sa'd says that the Prophet made brothers between him and Khunays ibn Hudhafa. 1

A note

In the next entry Ibn Hajar mentions another man with the kunya Abu Abs, Ibn Amir ibn Adi al-Sulami, who attended Badr according to Ibn al-Kalbi. 2 The two should not be confused.
