عبد الله بن جبير بن النعمان الأنصاري الأوسي

An Ansari Companion of the Aws who fought at Badr. The Prophet appointed him commander of the fifty-archer detachment at Uhud and charged them not to leave their position on the hill in victory or defeat. When most of his men left seeking spoils, he held firm with nine others on the hill. He was killed by Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) and his cavalry when they executed the flanking manoeuvre. He was a Badri, which is a high honour 1.

Overview

Abd Allah ibn Jubayr of the Aws. He attended the Aqaba with the seventy, and attended Badr and Uhud, and was martyred at Uhud as commander of the archers. 2

Command of the archers at Uhud

The Prophet appointed him over the archers at Uhud, who were fifty men, and charged them to stand on the two hills, a ridge of the mountain of Uhud. 2 He was killed that day and mutilated, and Ikrima ibn Abi Jahl (may God be pleased with him) killed him. 2

When the archers saw the Muslims gathering the spoils, Ibn Jubayr reminded them of the Prophet ﷺ's orders and said: "Have you forgotten what the Messenger of God said to you?" Most of them paid no attention, and about forty of them left their positions on the mountain, so that only nine of his companions were left with Ibn Jubayr, who held their positions. 3 Khalid ibn al-Walid seized the chance, turned until he reached the rear of the Muslim army, and destroyed Ibn Jubayr and his companions. 3

Notes for researchers

  • Al-Dhahabi's remark on his order to the archers to hold firm is summarised here. The detail of the archers leaving their positions is taken from al-Mubarakfuri's "Sealed Nectar" (pp. 255 and 264), and has not yet been compared with Ibn Hisham's biography.
