«أُري رسول الله أعمار الناس قبله، فتقاصر أعمار أمته، فأعطاه الله ليلة القدر، خير من ألف شهر»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
It reached Malik from a trustworthy man of the people of knowledge that the Messenger of God ﷺ was shown the lifespans of people before him, or as God willed, and it seemed to him that the lifespans of his community were too short for them to reach as much work as others reached in long life; so God gave him the Night of Decree, better than a thousand months. The editor notes that Abu Musab (890) and Suwayd (452) transmitted it from Malik; Ibn Abd al-Barr says he does not know it traced through any route in any other book than the Muwatta; and that it belongs to the encouragements and virtues, not the rulings. 1
