Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on the expiation for one who breaks the fast in Ramadan. Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab, from Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (may God be pleased with him), from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), that a man broke his fast in Ramadan, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to make expiation by freeing a slave, or fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty needy people. He said: I cannot find any. A basket of dates was brought to the Prophet, and he said: take this and give it in charity. He said: I know of no one more in need of it than myself. The Prophet laughed until his canine teeth showed and said: eat it. The editor notes that the meaning of this hadith is connected in the two Sahihs, and refers to Ibn Abd al-Barr's comment (al-Tamhid 8/21) on the hadith that follows. 1
