Summary
Malik transmits from Ata ibn Abdallah al-Khurasani, from Said ibn al-Musayyab, that a Bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ beating his chest and pulling his hair, saying: I am ruined! The Prophet asked: what is it? He said: I lay with my wife while fasting in Ramadan. The Prophet said: can you free a slave? He said: no. He said: can you offer a camel as a sacrifice? He said: no. He said: then sit down. A basket of dates was brought to the Prophet, and he said: take this and give it in charity. He said: no one is more in need than I am. He said: eat it, and fast one day in place of what you did. Malik said: Ata said: I asked Said ibn al-Musayyab how much dates was in that basket? He said: between fifteen and twenty sa'. The editor notes that the hadith is relayed in the transmission of the majority; that the mention of the camel is not preserved in the sound hadiths; and that mention of the slave and the charity of the basket is preserved from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) and Aisha, referring to al-Tamhid (8/21). 1
