Summary
The first hadith in the Book of Fasting, in the chapter on sighting the new moon for the fasting person and breaking the fast in Ramadan. Malik transmits from Nafi, from Abdullah ibn Umar, that the Prophet ﷺ mentioned Ramadan and said: do not fast until you see the new moon, and do not break your fast until you see it; but if it is hidden from you, then estimate it. The editor notes that Abu Musab, Suwayd and al-Qa'nabi transmitted it from Malik (al-Bukhari 1906), as did Abu Dawud and Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim in al-Nasai; some routes read 'from Nafi and Abdallah ibn Dinar'; and that it is agreed upon in the two Sahihs through several routes from Ibn Umar. 1
