Summary

Malik transmits from Thawr ibn Zayd al-Dili, from Abdullah ibn Abbas (may God be pleased with him), that the Prophet ﷺ mentioned Ramadan and said: do not fast until you see the new moon, and do not break your fast until you see it; but if it is hidden from you, then complete the count to thirty. The editor notes that the transmitters of Malik did not mention Ikrima in it, that the hadith is preserved for Ikrima from Ibn Abbas, and that Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 2/26) claimed Malik omitted Ikrima because he disliked the words of Said ibn al-Musayyab in his book, which Ibn Abd al-Barr rejects, since Malik named him in the Book of Pilgrimage. The editor notes that the hadith of Ikrima from Ibn Abbas is sound, in al-Tayalisi, Ibn Abi Shayba, Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasai. 1
