«كنا نخرج زكاة الفطر صاعاً من طعام، أو صاعاً من شعير، أو صاعاً من تمر، أو صاعاً من أقط، أو صاعاً من زبيب، وذلك بصاع النبي»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Iyad ibn Abdallah ibn Abi Sarh al-Amiri, that he heard Abu Said al-Khudri (may God be pleased with him) say: we used to give the zakat of fast-breaking as a sa' of food, or a sa' of barley, or a sa' of dates, or a sa' of dried curd, or a sa' of raisins, by the Prophet ﷺ's sa'. The editor notes that Abu Musab, al-Baghawi, Khalid ibn Makhlad, al-Qa'nabi, Ibn Wahb in al-Tahawi, al-Tinnisi in al-Bukhari, Ibn al-Qasim, al-Shafii and Yahya ibn Yahya al-Nisaburi in Muslim transmitted it. Ibn Abd al-Barr (al-Tamhid 4/127) says the Muwatta transmitters did not say 'in the time of the Messenger of God', and that this is correctly reported from Abu Said by several routes; Sufyan transmitted it from Zayd ibn Aslam with the wording 'when the Messenger of God was among us'; al-Tirmidhi (673) called it a sound hadith. 1
