«إنكم لتبكون عليها، وإنها لتعذب في قبرها»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
Malik transmits from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr (may God be pleased with him), from his father, from Amra bint Abd al-Rahman, that she heard Aisha, when someone told her that Abdullah ibn Umar said the dead is punished by the weeping of the living. She said: may God forgive Abu Abd al-Rahman. He did not lie, but he forgot or erred. The Prophet passed by a Jewish woman whom her family were weeping over, and he said: they are weeping over her, and she is being punished in her grave. The editor notes that Ishaq al-Tabba' transmitted it from Malik in Ahmad, along with Suwayd, al-Qanabi in al-Bukhari, Qutayba in Muslim, al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasai, al-Shafii and al-Shaybani; and that Abu Musab and Uthman ibn Umar transmitted it without the words 'from his father', and both versions are sound, since Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr narrates from his father from Amra and also directly from Amra. He wonders that Ibn Abd al-Barr did not mention this difference. 1
