«إذا أنشأت بحرية ثم تشاءمت فتلك عين غديقة»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report from Malik that he was told the Prophet ﷺ used to say: when a sea cloud rises and then moves toward the north, that is a copious spring. The editor explains that a cloud "rising from the sea" appears from the sea side and climbs, and "moving northward" means taking the direction of Syria, which lies to the north of Medina. The editor notes that Abu Mus'ab and Suwayd transmitted it, and that Ibn Abd al-Barr knows of no other source for it outside the Muwatta, except what al-Shafi'i mentions in his Book of Rain from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Yahya from Ishaq ibn Abdullah in similar words. Ibn Abi Yahya is disparaged and abandoned, and Malik's report is better than his narration (al-Tamhid). 1
