«إني لأنسى أو أنسى لأسن»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report from Malik that he was told the Prophet ﷺ said he forgets or is made to forget, so as to establish rules of forgetfulness for the people, in the chapter on what to do about forgetting. The editor notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that this wording is not known from the Prophet by any connected or stopped chain, and that it is one of four transmitted statements in the Muwatta not found elsewhere. Its meaning is sound in principle. Ibn al-Salah, in his treatise on connecting the four statements, said the hadith of forgetting is transmitted through many sound channels, and cited the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud. 1 2
