«إنما مثل الصلاة كمثل نهر غمر عذب بباب أحدكم، يقتحم فيه كل يوم خمس مرات، فما ترون ذلك يبقي من درنه؟»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Amir ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas from his father, in the chapter on practice in the congregational prayer: two brothers lived, and one died forty nights before the other. The virtue of the first was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, and he asked whether the other was not a Muslim. They said yes, and he was fine. He asked how they knew what his prayer had reached. He struck a likeness of prayer as a flowing stream of sweet water at the door of one of them, into which he plunges five times a day and nothing of its dirt remains. The editor notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that the story of the two brothers is known from Sa'd only in this mursal of Malik, and that al-Bazzar denied it, though Malik's mursal reports are considered sound in origin. Ibn Wahb transmitted it from Makhrama ibn Bukayr from his father from Amir ibn Sa'd from his father similarly, and the story is known from Talha ibn Ubayd Allah, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him) and Ubayd ibn Khalid (al-Tamhid). Abu Mus'ab and Suwayd transmitted it from Malik. 1 2
