Chain of transmission

  1. Malik ibn Anas
  2. Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Ansari
  3. 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb

Summary

The first hadith in the chapter on asking for rain. Yahya transmits from Malik from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Amr ibn Shu'ayb as a mursal: when the Prophet ﷺ asked for rain he said, "O God, give rain to Your servants and Your animals, spread Your mercy, and revive Your dead land". The editor notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that Malik transmitted it as a mursal, followed by al-Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman and Abd al-Aziz ibn Muslim al-Qasmali, while a group from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather transmitted it connected, including Hafs ibn Ghiyath, al-Thawri, Abd al-Rahim ibn Sulayman and Salam Abu al-Mundhir. Abu Dawud (1176) gave al-Thawri's connected version and al-Bayhaqi Abd al-Rahim's, and Abu Hatim al-Razi preferred the mursal report, which the editor agrees with. 1
