Summary

Amr ibn Shu'ayb ibn Muhammad ibn Abdallah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him), a Successor who narrated from his father from his grandfather Abdallah ibn Amr ibn al-As; he died in 118 AH. 1

His standing in hadith

The authors of the four Sunans, Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Hibban in some cases, and al-Hakim all used his hadith as evidence; Abu Dawud related from Ahmad that the hadith scholars cite Amr ibn Shu'ayb when they choose to argue from a narration. The charge against him was that part of his "from his father from his grandfather" transmission came from a found scroll rather than audition, and copied scrolls invite corruption; Ibn Hibban nonetheless held him trustworthy in himself and argued he belongs among the reliable narrators, while his father-from-grandfather strand is judged like other Successors' interrupted reports: the mursal and cut are set aside and the sound reports stand. 1

How to read his transmission

Al-Dhahabi wrote that his hadith is to be examined: what arrives anomalous is dropped and the rest is narrated in the Sunans and legal chapters with its chain graded; great imams used him and none, so far as he knew, abandoned him. Caution is needed only for material carried uniquely by weak transmitters from him — al-Muthanna ibn al-Sabbah, Muhammad ibn Ubaydallah al-Arzami, Hajjaj ibn Arta'a, Ibn Lahi'a, Ishaq ibn Abi Farwa — unlike the transmissions of Husayn al-Mu'allim, Sulayman ibn Musa the jurist, and Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani. 2
