«من شهد العشاء فكأنما قام نصف ليلة، ومن شهد الصبح فكأنما قام ليلة»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Taymi from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Amra al-Ansari, in the chapter on the night and dawn prayers: Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him) came to the isha prayer and saw few people present, so he lay down at the back of the mosque waiting for more people to come. Ibn Abi Amra sat with him, and Uthman asked him about himself and what Qur'an he had. Then he said that whoever attends isha is as though he stood half the night, and whoever attends dawn as though he stood the whole night. The editor notes that Abu Mus'ab and Suwayd transmitted it as a stopped report, and that Ibn Abd al-Barr said such a matter is not known by opinion, and that it was transmitted raised through Uthman ibn Hakim from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim. Al-Daraqutni and al-Tirmidhi preferred the raised form, and he cites Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzayma and Ibn Hibban. 1 2
