«ما حبسك عن صلاة العصر؟ فذكر له الرجل عذراً، فقال عمر: طففت»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Chain of transmission
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Ansari, in the chapter on the general rules of times: Umar ibn al-Khattab left the afternoon prayer and met a man who had not attended it. He asked what had kept him, the man gave an excuse, and Umar said, "You have cheated", meaning he fell short. Yahya says that Malik reported that everything has its fulfilment and its shortfall. The editor notes that the chain is broken because Yahya ibn Sa'id did not meet Umar, and that Abu Mus'ab, Suwayd and Muhammad ibn al-Hasan transmitted it. 1 2
