«يا صاحب الحوض لا تخبرنا، فإنا نرد على السباع وترد علينا»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Taymi from Yahya ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Hatib, in the chapter on water for ablution: Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) went out with a company that included Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him), and they came to a pool. Amr asked his companion whether wild animals drink from it, and Umar forbade him to tell them, saying that they drink from it and it drinks from them; that is, water is pure as long as it is not changed. The editor notes the report is broken because Yahya ibn Abd al-Rahman did not meet Umar, and cites Yahya ibn Ma'in that the statement "I heard Umar" is false and that the report is from his father, and that Yahya was born in the caliphate of Uthman. 1 2
