Summary

Jalal al-Dawla Abu Tahir, son of Baha' al-Dawla ibn Adud al-Dawla, Buyid amir of Iraq; he assumed rule in 416 when Sultan Sharaf al-Dawla died while he was at Basra, robed his vizier Ibn Makula, then saw the army defect to Abu Kalijar who was proclaimed at Baghdad — Ibn al-Jawzi says the khutba for Jalal al-Dawla was read in 416 under three titles. 2 3

Military turmoil in Baghdad

His troops plundered al-Ahwaz for sixteen days in 421; the ghilman drove him out to Ukbara in 423 and he returned only through the intercession of Kamal al-Dawla Abu Sinan, then they seized and humiliated him in Ramadan 424. In 427 the army rioted, pelting him with bricks — he caught one in his hand and slipped out at midnight to the Tigris while they sank his ferry thinking him aboard, and made his way in disguise to al-Sharif al-Murtada's house in al-Karkh. In Ramadan 429 his titles were read as "Shahanshah al-A'zam, King of Kings" and the crowd pelted the preacher with bricks; in Dhu'l-Qa'da 430 the Turks mutinied over arrears so that the preacher prayed the feast-day prayer at Baratha with only three men behind him. He walked barefoot to visit the shrines — from al-Qir to the Ha'ir and from the trench to the Kufa shrine, nearly a farsakh. 4

Death

In 435 his death was rumored and the panic drove people to move their money into the caliph's compound until he appeared seated on a chair and they quieted; he then died on Friday night, 5 Sha'ban 435, was washed by Abu'l-Qasim ibn Shahin al-Wa'iz and Abd al-Qadir ibn al-Samak, and was buried at Dar al-Malika beside Adud al-Dawla and Baha' al-Dawla. His rule had lasted sixteen years and eleven months; he was fifty-one years and some months old. 5
