Summary

Al-Malik Abu Kalijar ibn Sultan al-Dawla ibn Baha' al-Dawla ibn Adud al-Dawla al-Buwayhi, his father's designated heir; he was born at Basra in Shawwal 399. 2

His name proclaimed at Baghdad

When Sultan Sharaf al-Dawla died in 416 the army went over to him and proclaimed his name at Baghdad, before the khutba reverted to Jalal al-Dawla. In 423 the Baghdad ghilman called on him after expelling Jalal al-Dawla, and he answered with a cautious letter demanding five hundred ghilman as an advance guard; in Rajab 429 he and Jalal al-Dawla swore that neither would harm the other. 3 4

Rule and death

He entered Hamadhan in 433 and drove the Ghuzz from it, and entered Baghdad in 436, where he introduced the drum-beat at the five prayers — until then kings at Baghdad had had only three drummings, instituted for Adud al-Dawla, and he made them five. He died in Ramadan 440 in his forties; the ghilman plundered his treasuries and his slave women burned the tents around his bier. His son Abu Nasr, titled al-Malik al-Rahim, succeeded him; Abu Kalijar had ruled Iraq for four years and two months. 5 2
