Al-Malik al-Rahim ibn Abi Kalijar ibn Sultan al-Dawla ibn Baha' al-Dawla ibn Adud al-Dawla, last Buyid king of Iraq; on his father's death he marched on Basra and prevailed, fought his brothers over kingship, seized Basra and al-Ahwaz, and stayed at war with al-Basasiri and Dubays ibn Mazyad until Tughril Beg's entry into Baghdad in 447 AH extinguished the Buyid state.

Overview

Al-Malik al-Rahim Abu Nasr Khusraw Firuz, son of Abu Kalijar ibn Sultan al-Dawla ibn Baha al-Dawla ibn Adud al-Dawla. He was the last of the Buyid kings in Iraq, according to Ibn Khaldun. 1

When his father died he marched on Basra, hoping for it, and he was victorious. Then he fought his brothers over the kingdom, and seized Basra and al-Ahwaz. 1

His war was linked with al-Basasiri and Dubays ibn Mazyad until Tughril Beg entered Baghdad in 447 AH, and the Buyid state came to an end. 1

Death of Abu Kalijar and investiture of al-Malik al-Rahim

Abu Kalijar fell ill in Jumada I 440, was bled three times in the open country, and died on the Thursday night of Ramadan; the ghilman plundered treasuries, arms and mounts while his slave-girls burned the tents over his bier. His son Abu Nasr was acclaimed al-Malik al-Rahim and rode to the caliphal palace, kissed the earth, was robed in the seven-piece black investiture with the Rusafi turban, collar, two jewelled swords and gem-set crown, two bound standards presented, the patent of investiture read over his chest, and was counselled to piety and justice — then rode the caliph's own tayyar back to his camp to receive congratulations.
