Summary

Dimam ibn Tha'laba al-Sa'di, of Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr 1.

His hadith

He is mentioned in the hadith of Anas in the two Sahihs: "While we were with the Prophet, a desert Arab came and said: Which of you is Ibn Abd al-Muttalib?" In it he embraced Islam and said: "I am a messenger of those behind me among my people, and I am Dimam ibn Tha'laba" 1. Ibn Hajar notes that the hadith turns in Bukhari on al-Layth from Sa'id al-Maqburi from Sharik from Anas. Bukhari also cited it in suspended form, and Muslim connected it through Sulayman ibn al-Mughira from Thabit from Anas 1.

At the end of the text, after he asked about the gross sins, he said: "By God, we used to keep clear of them in the Jahiliyya." When he turned to leave, the Messenger of God said: "Instruct the man" 1.

The Companions' praise of him

Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) used to say: "I have never seen anyone better at asking questions, or more concise, than Dimam ibn Tha'laba" 1. In Abu Dawud's report from Ibn Abbas: "Banu Sa'd sent Dimam ibn Tha'laba to the Prophet." At its end: "We have never heard of the delegate of any people who was better than Dimam" 1.

His dwelling

Al-Baghawi said that he lived in Kufa 1. In Ibn Manda's report he is "of Banu Tamim", which Ibn Hajar judges to be an error 2.

When did he come?

In Ibn Hisham's Sira

Ibn Ishaq relates the account of his delegation in detail, through Muhammad ibn al-Walid ibn Nuwayfi' from Kurayb from Ibn Abbas. Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr sent him. He made his camel kneel at the door of the mosque and went in. He was a sturdy, hairy man with two braids, and he asked: "Which of you is Ibn Abd al-Muttalib?" Then he adjured the Prophet by God concerning each obligation of Islam. When he had finished, he bore witness to the two testimonies and promised to perform the obligations without adding to them or diminishing them. The Prophet said: "If the man with the two braids speaks the truth, he will enter Paradise." 3 4 4

On returning to his people, he denounced al-Lat and al-Uzza. They frightened him with leprosy, scabies and madness, but he called them to Islam, and the people of his settlement embraced it before evening; see the arrival of Dimam ibn Tha'laba 4 5. The editors explain "the two braids" as two plaits of hair 4.

Dimam ibn Tha'laba comes as the envoy of Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr

Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr sent Dimam ibn Tha'laba to the Prophet; he knelt his camel at the mosque door, walked in and asked which of them was Ibn Abd al-Muttalib, then adjured him by God on each duty in turn: did God send you? did He order us to worship Him alone and cast off the idols? the five prayers? zakat, fasting, hajj? and the Prophet answered each time, O God, yes. He testified, promised to add nothing and omit nothing, and the Prophet said: if the man with the two plaits is truthful he will enter Paradise; he went home and his people embraced Islam in a day. Ibn Ishaq's isnad reaches Ibn Abbas.
